Apple Cinnamon Detox Water

It's a pretty common idea that if you want to improve your diet and eating habits, you should cut out caloric beverages. Drinking calories makes it far too easy to lose track of what you're really consuming, and when we've been doing it for years it can be hard to consider what a big difference cutting it out could make.

I've been drinking my 8 glasses (or more) of water daily for a while now, but I always had Diet Coke as my crutch. While I still roll my eyes when people go into the whole "diet soda is just as bad as regular soda" thing, and I know drinking it every now and then isn't going to kill me, I do realize that I'm better off without it.

The problem is that I think it's crazy to expect people to ONLY drink water every single day. I'm an American and I need some flavor. That's where this detox water comes in.

This water recipe will help clean up your system and even help your body burn calories more efficiently. That old rule "the more water you drink, the less you retain" is absolutely right, and drinking this apple cinnamon water will speed up the process of cutting water weight.

You will need:
A large pitcher
Fuji apples
Cinnamon sticks (powdered works too, I used about one teaspoon)
Ice
Water
*Update* Somebody suggested a squeeze of lemon to keep the apples fresher!

Oops, I only had powdered cinnamon! :)
This recipe has a 1:1:1 ratio, meaning you'll need 1 fuji apple and 1 cinnamon stick for 1 pitcher of water. With that said, you can leave the same apple and cinnamon stick in the pitcher for up to three days while refilling the water.

Slice a fuji apple and toss the slices into the pitcher with the cinnamon stick. Cover with ice, then fill the pitcher with water and allow it to set in the fridge for 15 minutes before drinking. Enjoy it throughout the day in the place of any juice or soda you would normally have!

    1. Ice will make it much colder than your refrigerator will, unless you keep your fridge extremely cold.

      Apples in general have great detoxifying benefits because their alkalinity removes the toxins that come with high-protein foods, so if you have a high-protein diet it's always a good idea to be chomping on apples as well. Fuji apples specifically have one of the best carb/fiber/protein ratios (high carbs, HIGH fiber, very low protein) out of all the types of apples, giving you maximum detox benefits. Hope that helps!

    3. Its actually better to drink colder water for your metabolism because your stomach and body needs to heat up the water to digest it properly, so your body will burn more calories by heating up cold water than drinking warm or room temperature water.

    4. Actually, according to Chinese herbal medicine, it's better to drink fluids at room temperature. It allows digestion to progress more efficiently. Think of it this way - you eat something, then drink cold fluids. Any fats/oils will thicken, hampering digestion. Warm fluids keep the fats liquid, facilitating passage through the stomach and aiding digestion.

    8. The "drinking cold water after a meal will harden the fats" is pure bunk. Do you really think that food that's essentially in a 98.6 degree oven is going to harden for long enough from a splash of cold water to hamper digestion? By the time cold water hits your stomach it's already beginning to warm, and within a minute or so it's body temperature.

    9. Ice in any detox water is used as a weight, to keep the fruit down, so it infuses the water better. You're supposed to put your fruit and any other ingredients in before doing the ice. Then, fill the ice almost to the top and then the water.

    10. This recipe is for daily hydration and detox not a beverage with meals anyhow. Drinking anything with or soon after a meal is not good for digestion. To properly digest your food, enzymes need to break it down,starting with the saliva when you chew your food, then additional enzymes and acids complete the breakdown in order to pass the food out of the stomach. diluting any of that process with unnecessary fluid is counter productive. Just like swimming wait 30 minutes after eating.

    12. I agree with Chris, drinking cold water is not a good idea especially with people who have heart issues.
      Water too cold is too much of a shock to the system. Another way to view this would be to try and mix cold water with oils or fats especially during meals. It is beneficial to drink most liquids at room temperature or let them warm up a little after removing from the fridge.
      There is an excellent book called, "Your Body's Many Cries For Water", that points out temperatures and the benefits of drinking water. It's all good information here, thank you...

  4. does the cinnamon have a health benefit or is it just for flavor? Im on day 2 of this, I found that because im not home enough to refill from the pitcher I put half and apple and a cinnamon stick in my water bottle and bring it around with me. The apples yesterday lasted about 5 hours till it started tasting funky, why do you think that is?

  16. I just searched for the equivalent of 1 cinnamon stick and you can substitute 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon as a replacement for one cinnamon stick.

  17. I added fresh lemon juice to help keep the apple "fresh" and it adds a little tang to the water, too. I don't think there is any specific amount you need to add...I did it to suit my taste. Lemon juice is also good for you just like apples and cinnamon :)

    2. Freshly squeezed lemon is a good addition. The liver is the primary organ for breaking down fat and making it available to burn for fuel. The problem is the fat receptors get clogged over time. lemon breaks the bond and clears the liver to get on with doing its job. Any weight loss plan should include regular doses of fresh lemon juice.

  18. This is awesome! Just a note that most the powdered cinnamon we buy at the store doesn't help and isn't great for us (however is a good insect repellant!). A good key: if it floats, it isn't good. You want to use "true" cinnamon - cinnamon verum or ceylon cinnamon. You can find it online or at a natural food store. :)

  28. I just started using this for energy, cause I don't have any, I brought a concept 2 rowing machine to lose weight, and don't have the energy to use it. I had everything at home except the apples so after I read this detox on a friends post on Facebook I decided to go get Fuji apples. The post of Facebook just said apples well I prefer Fuji apples over any apples. I will sometimes go for gala apples as well. I am glad I picked the right apples for this detox. Drank this for a month (2 gallons a day, mixed with 1 gallon of plain water to keep myself hydrated ) of course with exercise and changing the way I ate and I didnt notice a change really just now that its a habit to drink this instead of soda or sweet tea (a Texas must) and my kids love to eat the watered down apples and suck on the cinnamon

  49. My roommate and I decided to give this a try and I am literally addicted! I actually use a whole Granny Smith apple in mine along with the cinnamon stick and change out the apple and cinnamon stick in the pitcher every morning when I wake up. Now I don't know about anyone else, but ever since I started drinking this, I have had A LOT more energy than I used to. I told a few friends about this as well and after drinking it throughout the day, they said they have a lot more energy too. Although i'm not sure if this will actually help you lose weight, I certainly have dropped a few pounds after I started drinking this. I started making this 3 weeks ago and I thought i would go ahead and weigh myself to see if this "miracle drink" could actually help with my weight loss. Well sure enough, I stepped on the scale today and i was almost 7 POUNDS lighter than I was when I first started the drink! Like i said before-I'm in college so I don't have the BEST drinking and eating habits but I try to eat as best as I can Sunday-Thursday while sipping on this detox drink throughout the day!
