The Not-Too-Crazy Detox

When people tell me they're on a strict, long-term diet I get completely mixed feelings. Example: the paleo diet. If a person tells me they are on the paleo diet, my first thought is always "this person is either clinically insane or has never been to the Cheesecake Factory," and my second thought is generally "that's really impressive, I want to try that!" .....until reality kicks in. I cannot even commit to watching The Mindy Project two weeks in a row, let alone change my entire diet permanently. I've always been curious about the benefits of detoxing, eating clean, and hitting "reset" on your system, but it all seemed too extreme!

Until now, every juice cleanse I read about or saw on Pinterest had some absurd requirement involved that would turn me off every time. Most of them sounded close to starvation while the others sounded like medical experiments without pay. This detox, however, is not too crazy.

End each day with a detox bath:
While hot water is running, pour 2 cups lavender epsom salt into bath.
Water should be at a comfortable temperature, but hot enough to trigger sweat.
Soak for about 15 minutes.

Benefits:
After doing this detox, my skin feels absolutely amazing and my complexion is glowing. My metabolism is running at lightspeed, I have more energy (without caffeine or sugar), and - drumroll please....

It eliminated that annoying last layer of fat over my lower abs
Seriously! Every girl's dream.

Going three full days without eating any solid food will also show you how much eating you do just because you want something to nibble on. You'll find yourself completely full and still wanting chips just because they're crunchy, and then you'll cut that habit out!

Tips:
1. These recipes make a LOT to drink- you will actually find yourself full before you finish them, but make sure you drink the whole thing each time.
2. DRINK WATER. Drink it all day long. Be sure to have at least two cups after each detox bath to avoid dehydration. I probably had about 15 cups per day.
3. Don't forget to sweat! During a detox, make sure to do light cardio each day. Breaking a sweat is what will release those icky toxins.
3. Make your smoothies ahead of time. They will store perfectly fine in a sealed container in the fridge.
4. Use your coconut oil as lotion after each bath. It is solid in the jar but will melt with your body heat.

Give this a try! Feel free to ask any questions, and let me know how it goes!

  1. I started this this morning, and I'm just wondering if you are supposed to juice the kale, celery, etc. or if you just blend it all in a blender. Thanks

    1. Glad to hear you're trying it out! These recipes are best with a blender so you really get every nutrient from the ingredients.

      Enjoy!

    2. I did the lunch time drink in the blender and it seems gritty from the celery and/or kale. Any suggestions?

    3. Buy a better blender Kelly..... we use a vitamix blender

      Delete
    4. I realize this is quite a late response but to anyone else who is struggling with the lunch-time drink I found that if you blend the celery and kale first (by blend I mean process, I use a food processor instead since my blender is only for individual drinks and too small for these recipes) and continue to blend while you add the remaining ingredients along with several pieces of ice the drink is much better. I am on my second day and yesterday I was unable to finish the lunch drink because it was so unbearable. Today I'm enjoying it.

    5. Just for anyone who comes by this later....
I found that even after blending the lunch drink, it was still almost inedible because of the awful celery taste and slight grittiness. Not sure if my four stalks was larger than normal or what, but it was awful. I don't really like juicing things when I can help it because you leave out so much stuff- I prefer to blend it. But this drink just needed it!
So, I juiced the celery and the cucumber, then blended the pulp with a tiny bit of the juice, strained the puree to get all the juice out I could, and threw the pulp out. Sorry celery, you've got to go : ) Then I blended the rest of the ingredients, starting with the kale and celery/cucumber juice, and adding the rest of the stuff. It actually turned out good! Like, really good!
Another thought would be to juice ( or blend) separately the celery and kale, then make the shake with the rest of the ingredients. Then just chug down the juice and enjoy the shake! Having three drinks of something awful is much better than two whole cupfuls.
Just a thought, it worked for me.

    6. I drink this smoothie on a weekly basis, but I agree not every blender will work to chop the celery and kale properly, it needs to be a high power blender. I have the vitamix and it does the job beautifully. I am sure there are other blenders that will work, but like I said, it has to be a high power one. It needs to run for at least 3-4 minutes at high speed and if you still find it undrinkable just add a little orange juice or half a lemon. I had used the bullet beofre and it wasn't chopping kale or celery the same as the vitamix.

  3. I too have been looking for a detox that didn't make think of dying when I read it so this is awesome! One question, though... I only have a 3/4 bath in my house, making a bath impossible. Is it still plausible to do the detox without being able to take the bath?

    1. A friend of mine had the same problem! She turned the shower on hot without the fan on for a sauna effect and used the epsom salt as a body scrub, leaving it on for a bit before rinsing. It seemed to work perfectly fine :)

  4. I hope this isn't too personal of a question, but did you or anyone you know lose weight from this cleanse? Or is it more of a cleanse that just makes you feel better? This is the best cleanse I have seen so far and would love to try it! thanks for sharing.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Not too personal at all! I didn't weigh myself in the process, but I could see a clear difference in my stomach definition. It got rid of that last layer of fat on my lower stomach that's always SO impossible to lose. In the comments on Dr. Oz's website many people say they had success losing pounds with this, especially after doing it a couple of times. Hope this helps!

  6. Okay, today is day 1 for me! Just had the second half of my breakfast smoothie and asdes ice and reblended to get it cold. That was the ticket! Second half went down WAY easier than the first :)

Btw, thanks for sharing. ..im very excited to see how this turns out :)

  7. Should the entire stalk of celery be used for lunch (leaves and all)?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yep! I chopped off the white part at the bottom because it gave the smoothie a really bitter taste, but other than that you want to use the whole thing :)

I'm so glad you're trying it! Good luck with the lunch- thats the toughest one to get down!

      Delete
  8. Thanks! Yes, lunch IS way harder than breakfast...kinda gross but pushing through it. Dinner looks like it'll be tasty.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I'm planning on trying this next week but I want to be prepared. How do the smoothies taste? I tried the master cleanse and could not choke down the drinks but these smoothies look much more tolerable and some of them look like they might even be good! Did you have trouble getting them down?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To me, the breakfast smoothie was really yummy! The lunch is definitely a challenge, but the good thing about it being hard to drink is that you end up sipping on it over a longer period of time and it keeps you from getting hungry. The dinner drink has cayenne pepper in it, so if you're good with spicy food then it'll be a breeze for you because the rest of it is totally tolerable.

The best advice i can give for the lunch drink is to blend the heck out of it and drink it as cold as possible!

  10. Hi! I had a question. I started the detox today and i love it so far my only problem is trying not to eat the things i crave. I read that you could eat beans during a detox, and well i ate a small bowl of charo beans, a few Mandarin oranges, and two peices of avocado... Is this ok?

    1. It might give you different results and have less of an impact on speeding up your metabolism, but if your eating organic foods without preservatives your body will still appreciate it. I know gwenyth paltrow (who is obsessed with detoxes and cleanses) tends to have some solid foods when she does them. Try sticking mainly to the smoothies though :)

      Hope that helps!

  11. Question; do these carry well? If I freeze my drinks can I carry them to work? There's no fridge there.

      lunch - 377 cal

  17. I did this right after thanksgiving last year and lost eight pounds (weighed a lot to start with). I loved the breakfast smoothie the best, then dinner, and lasty lunch. After this detox I had a craving for healthy foods, and did not eat large portions as much as I use to. I am going to try this again this month (feb) and hope to do it in total four times for a year to lett my body rejuvenate itself.

  19. I'm allergic to nuts, apples, and celery (and many others) but I would love to try a detox. Any suggestions for swapping out items? I was thinking maybe orange for the apple, using sunbutter instead of almond butter, using rice milk instead of almond milk and coconut milk, and maybe palm oil instead of coconut? Do you think these swaps will change the affect of the detox, and would it still be worth trying? The smoothies sound delicious and I'm getting pretty good at dealing with all my allergies

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Wow, props for learning to handle those allergies! I would use regular filtered water with some extra lemon juice instead of coconut water (it's probably the most similar as far as hydration and cleansing) and i'm sure rice milk would be fine instead of almond milk. I don't know much about palm oil, but since its such a small measurement I'd just give it a try and see. If you want a cleanse option with fewer ingredients to worry about, try this lemon mint detox water:
      http://www.eat-yourself-skinny.com/2012/05/lemon-water-with-fresh-mint.html

My best friend drank it all day every day for a week (on top of healthy eating) and said she could see/feel a huge difference in her metabolism and all the water weight she lost. It gave her a great kickoff to her new workout plan!

This may be a dumb question, but I'm thinking it means one of the 3 smoothies..thanks so much for this site..I am starting Friday morning since I am off work and will be done before work on Monday :) Rita

    1. It means one of the three smoothies :) sorry it took me a bit to respond!

      Delete
    2. My understanding from Dr. Oz is that out bodies can't digest flaxseed or any other seed, it just goes through us and he says if you were to look at your bowel movements you would find the seeds still intact which means you haven't gotten any of the bennefits from it. So it is always best to have them ground so your body can absorb the nutrients. Again this is only something I believe I heard on the Dr. Oz show. If you are unsure please do the resarch for yourself.

I lost 4 pounds and it totally jumpstarted my metabolism I've been at a plateau for awhile and am now noticing a difference in my body. I'm allergic to coconut so I couldn't use the coconut oil or the coconut water I just used regular water. And Darcy I absolutely hate celery as well but it was doable as long as it was seriously blended the pineapple over ppowers the taste a bit which is good. During the actual detox I didn't feel great I felt very tired and had a headache most of the time but I noticed a difference in my lower belly pouch a full day after I finished the detox so don't get discouraged if it's day th ree and you feel like it's not doing anything! --Jessica

    1. Hi Jessica, I just come back from my grocery shopping and it cost me in total around AU$135,
So it's pretty expensive, but the next time will be much cheaper because you won't have to buy those products again (which are the most expensive):
Coconut oil, Flaxseeds, supplements, Stevia, lavender drops, cayenne pepper, almond butter, green tea

      Delete
    2. a lot ... easily over $100

      Delete
    3. It only cost me around $45 for everything. They sell little individual packets of almond butter at the store for $.88 and if you do the self-serve for flaxseed you can purchase just the small amount that you need. Also went with frozen fruits for the berries, pineapple, and mango. This was much cheaper for the amount needed and WAY less work!!!

  71. ok, so i started my diet today... I am in Vancouver, BC and was able to find everything at safeway (i was super surprised!! and yes. this includes the lavender epson salts, the coconut oil, flaxseeds, almond butter, almond milk, and coconut water).

The total (without the vitamins) came out to around $80. I know it sounds a tad expensive, but you have to realize that its actually A LOT of stuff that can be reused!

I ended up getting the raspberries, blueberries and mangoes frozen..since it was cheaper that way, they will last longer and they also make the smoothies more like a slush. I also got canned pineapple.

so here is my question, can i drink more of the green tea throughout the day? or would that be too much caffeine? (i love tea).

also, would it be possible to do this diet every week? or is it expected to only be once a month?

thanks for the info! Im on breakfast but I am looking forward to the rest of the day to check the other shakes out!

You can find everything at a grocery store, try Whole Foods or Harris Teeter if you can't find everything at a larger more commercialized grocery store.

It may seem expensive but this is a total of 9 meals & the left overs are great to put into a regular diet to continue to eat well.

Make sure to do a light work out during the day. I've swam & did a leg and ab work out and it feels great. Lunch is VERY filling, so take your time.

Everything taste great! If you take your time drinking these you won't be hungry for a snack.

I love it - It's not hard or strenuous, try it!!

  78. I am in the middle of finishing the dinner smoothie for day one.

So far I feel success that I made it through the day. I had a little trouble keeping up in my hour long gym class today and am wondering if that sufficed for my sweating. I did buy the bath salt and the idea of a bath at the end of the day sounds incredible. I can't remember the last time I've done that.

The lunch smoothie for me was fine. I had more trouble with the dinner smoothie at first, but now I'm getting the hang of it.

Luckily I had most ingredients already on hand so I had to buy very little. that's what hooked me on this detox. That and the fact that it's only three days.

Two more days to go. Tomorrow is my birthday, so I guess I didn't plan that out very well. At least I'm celebrating at the end of the week and hopefully won't feel like I want to overindulge after this detox.

    1. Thanks for the update! I hope you still got to celebrate your birthday with a little treat! I go by the rule that "calories don't count on your birthday" and it never lets me down ;)

Did it go well for the second two days?

  80. I would love to try this. I feel very icky, and I want to clean my body out! I am exclusively nursing my 2 month old, and would like to know if I can do this while nursing. I know that folic acid is broken down my green tea, and was told to stay away from that while pregnant. I figured it would be the same for nursing, but I don't know.

    1. Hi! Sorry to reply so late, hopefully I can still help at least a little bit :)

My best friend worked this into her diet while nursing but she did still eat some solid food. I would absolutely only do this after checking with your doctor to make sure you'd be getting enough nutrients in for both you and baby.

    1. Does your aunt drink coffee or caffeinated soda? I developed a bad coffee habit recently and the second time I did this cleanse the headaches really killed me because of the caffeine withdrawals. How did it turn out?

  82. Hello, I started this today. Breakfast was great and at first lunch was fine but I really struggled to finish it. I'm dreading tomorrow. Could I just eat the food lol. I found it so thick and I actually ate it with a spoon. Hope dinner is better...

  87. I just started this detox yesterday and I'm just going to be completely honest..the lunch drink is extremely difficult to get down and pretty gross. I have extremely sensitive gag reflexes, especially when it comes to texture. And the texture of the lunch drink is pretty bad. I sat here for 2 hours today trying to get it all down and still could not. I was wondering if there was any way to make the lunch drink easier to get down? I don't have a food processor and tried adding ice which seemed to make it worse. The breakfast drink is definitely my favorite I could drink this every day, but the other ones are pretty hard to get down.

  92. I just did this detox last week and I loved it. It was really difficult to not eat on day one...not because I was hungry, but like you said, I just wanted to eat. Once I got to day two it was easier and after day three I didn't have much desire to go back to eating solid food mostly because I felt SO good. I lost three pounds in total which is great but considering that I have about 70 to lose, I expected a little more. Still, felt great and had lots of energy (which is unusual for me) so I was satisfied. As far as taste goes, I liked all of the smoothies. Lunch is definitely the most difficult to finish but for me it wasn't because of the taste of it (I actually really liked the flavor) but because it was pretty thick and made two nearly full glasses of smoothie which took a long time to drink but really helped making me feel full. Breakfast is good but my absolute favorite is the dinner smoothie. I was most worried about that one because of the Cayenne pepper but I LOVED it. In fact, I have incorporated it into my everyday diet. I found a pretty good price on a big (3lb.) bag of frozen blueberries and make this smoothie for my lunch every day. I feel like it gives me the nutritional boost I need in the middle of the day and keeps me from snacking mindlessly in the afternoon. Also, the more I drink it the more I seem to crave it. Don't know what it is about the combination of flavors but I adore it.

  96. 3 day juice cleanse or detox juice should make a person feel really good and they may even personally want to continue their juice drinking habits even after those three days. Diet three days after the detoxing process is also recommended before going back a regular, healthy diet. At last, the feeling of hydration and rest from digestion is promoted by a detox juice.

Struggled a little with it yesterday because it was so coarse, but had no trouble with it today. I could drink the morning smoothie 3x's a day every day, and I love the dinner smoothie almost as much! Have not been hungry so far, just feels a little strange to not eat; am LOVING no cravings! On day 2, can't wait to see my results!

  115. I did this detox two years ago to see if I would lose weight and feel better. It was great. I lost 9lbs and shaped up and felt great. I'm doing it today to see if I will increase my milk supply. My baby is 8 months old so I'm not worried that it will harm her or myself. I'll get back in a couple of days to let you know how it's going. Day two is defiantly easier.

The reason for such restrictions is that sugar can cause hormonal imbalances that affect HGH production.
